At the eyepiece
Full dark adaptation takes 20–30 minutes as the rods rebuild their rhodopsin, and one glance at white light resets the whole clock. Low-intensity deep-red light lets you read a star atlas and find an eyepiece while sparing that rod-mediated night vision — which is why the torch is dimmable, and the discipline is to run it as faint as the task allows.

The Dobsonian
Faint enough to read the chart and find the focuser at the scope without resetting the dark adaptation those faint galaxies demand.
