The answers
I’m brand new — what should I point a first scope at tonight?
Start bright and work down: the Moon along the terminator, then Saturn if it’s up, the double star Albireo, and the globular cluster M13. It’s a near-guaranteed good first night. Our first-light checklist walks through the whole ritual.
Why is everything red, and why the dark background?
Both are content-meaningful. Dark adaptation takes about thirty minutes and a single glance at a bright white screen resets it — so the site is drenched true-night black with a hydrogen-alpha red accent, the same discipline as a star-party red flashlight.
How does First Light make money?
Two ways: affiliate commissions when you buy recommended gear through our links (as an Amazon Associate we may earn a commission), and our own original chart-accurate merchandise. No brand pays for placement in a ranking.
How long does merch take to arrive?
Everything is made to order: 2–5 business days on the print floor, then shipping. Most US orders arrive within 5–10 business days total, with tracking emailed on dispatch.
Is your gear advice trustworthy if you don’t run a lab?
Our picks reflect real sessions, club consensus, and forum wisdom — not a sponsored lab. We say so plainly, and gear that fails the field gets pulled even when it earns us a commission.
