At the eyepiece
Magnification is just the scope’s focal length divided by the eyepiece’s, so a 25 mm in a 1200 mm scope gives 48× — and the eyepiece’s apparent field of view decides how much sky that frames. A long-focal-length, low-power eyepiece also yields the widest true field and the largest exit pupil, which is why you sweep a star cluster with one and reach for a short one only to split a double.
Standalone · in the kit
Built for one job — true-field framing — and it needs nothing else on the table to do it. Still, the whole kit works best in concert on a dark night.
